My mom has diabetes, what can happen if it gets to low?!

Question: My mom has diabetes, what can happen if it gets to low?
So my mom found our that she has diabetes like 3 months ago, sometimes she gets real weak and her sugar is low. what can happen if it gets too low?

Answers:

OJ is orange juice. actually, apple juice has more sugars. I usually have a soda pop (but NOT diet)!! The point is to get sugar in her to raise her sugar levels to 'normal' by consuming something.

I find a peanut butter and jam sandwich with juice is very effective (for me!). The sugar in the juice and jam raise blood sugar fast while the protein in the peanut butter acts to moderate it (so sugars don't go too high too fast) and the bread (especially whole wheat bread) releases sugars at a slower rate, to take the place of the first sugars after they are gone from the blood.

Your mom really needs to be able to recognize low blood sugar symptoms (which happen if one takes more insulin than needed, does not eat after taking insulin, or exercises hard so that the 'usual' amount of insulin is actually used super effectively.)

It is good that you recognize the symptoms, too. If her blood sugar get way too low, do not hesitate in calling the paramedics, who will give her sugar (in her veins, I believe) to help her recover quickly. When in doubt, call the paramedics. They do not mind a false call if it was made with good intentions / for a good reason.

If low blood sugar happens too often, medications need to be adjusted.

Same idea if she is just on drugs now, and not yet insulin.

Make sure your mom is checking her blood glucose levels regularly throughout the day and make sure they don't go below 4. Some symptoms to look for if you're worried your mom's sugar is too low is cool clammy skin, shaky, weakness. In severe incidences of low sugar levels one will begin to show signs of confusion, inability to talk, etc. due to low levels of sugar going to the brain (which is the brain's source of energy), this can ultimately cause the individual to become comatose. This is only in severe incidences so don't be worried unless your mom's sugar levels are too low.
What your mom can do, and I'm sure her doctor already talked to her about this, is if her sugar levels are too low to drink a glass of orange juice, or eat a few pieces of candy (such as lifesavers) because these contain the simple sugars that her body can readily use once ingested.
As long as your mom is regularly checking her blood glucose (sugar) levels, watching what she eats and taking her prescribed medication then she will be fine.

If it gets too low she will experience sweating, sometimes shaking and confusion. If it gets really low, she will be unresponsive. Does she have a plan if these symptoms occur? To help her if she is awake, give her OJ with a few teaspoons of sugar. If she is unresponsive, call 911.

If her blood sugar level gets too low, she can die. She, and your family, need to have a plan on what to do if her blood sugars drop very low.

also keep gluco shots, paste and tablets handy
