How bad is breathing in dust generated by duststorms?!

Question:

How bad is breathing in dust generated by duststorms?

I am currently in a Middle Eastern country where the dust in the air is very prominent - almost always - it looks like fog sometimes, it's so bad. I have been here for 2 months and will be here for 5 more. I know people who live here must be used to it...but my lungs aren't. What kind of effect will this have on me, if any?

We are issued masks to use when we are outside, however the dust gets indoors as well. In addition I do use a scarf when a dusk mask would be in the way.

I understand that some common sense issues need to be put into practice to protect yourself. However the dust is unavoidable all of the time, and I was just considering any effects it may have - even if you try to filter out most of it.

My concern is a long term issue, kind of like how asbestosis develops over time and exposure.

Thank you, by the way for your contribution to my question Mark and Crys, but I think that Crys gets the points as I can see where she is going with this.

Answers:

basically treat it like a snow storm and cover your nose and mouth, try not to inhale too much of the dust. It may not affect you now, but it can embed in your lungs and you would see the effects later in life. Use a surgical mask or N95 mask if you'll be out alot in it.
