Is there any treatments for chicken pox?!

Question:

Is there any treatments for chicken pox?

My 4yr old son has chicken pox, this just started a couple days ago. It is not severe.

Answers:

Unless symptoms are severe, chicken pox is treated at home. For headache, fever and muscle aches, give him Children's Tylenol as directed on the label. Never give aspirin or medications that contain aspirin due to the risk of Reye's syndrome. For itching, frequent baths can help. Use Aveeno oatmeal products or grind dry oatmeal into a fine powder and add 2 cups to tepid bath water. One-half to one cup of baking soda can also be added to reduce itching. Calamine lotion or any similar OTC lotion can be applied to the blisters to help dry them out and soothe the skin. For severe itching, the antihistamine Benadryl or its OTC counterpart diphenhydramine can be used. Diphenhydramine, the drug in Benadryl, causes drowsiness and can be helpful at night to help your son sleep. For daytime use, loratadine (Claritin), certrizine (Zyrtec) and fexofenadine (Allegra) can be used to control itching but don't cause drowsiness.

Finally, trim his nails. Scratching increases the risk of secondary bacterial infections. Your son may have wear mittens if needed to prevent scratching.

FYI: After reading "ana c's" explanation of chicken pox, I concluded that she has no idea what it is.

And the reason scratching is discouraged is not because of possible scarring but because of the risk of secondary infection.
