Do I need a colonoscopy every year ?!

Question: Do I need a colonoscopy every year ?
I'm 45 yrs, male, have been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and Primary Scherolsing Cholangitis. My Gastro Dr, wants me to have a colonoscopy every year due to my two chronic diseases. Had one last year and everything was fine, biopsies they took where non cancerous. Just wondering if one every year is needed?

Answers:

I have UC, and my Gastro has me get them every year to see the progression if it is getting worse or not. They usually do it to check inflammation. If your doctor wants you to have one year, than he must think that your UC is progressing either way. I don't know much about the other disease you suffer.from, but it is a possibility that it affects your UC. Usually if a doctor suggests something, it is to benefit you and you only.

Diagnosed with UC at 17.

I'd get a second opinion. Having had a couple of them in less than the usual 5 years I know the prep isn't fun and I don't anticipate the next time with much enthusiasm. If your conditions are under control with medication, it may be possible to not have one every year.

The diseases paired with having found more than one polyp is reason to do annual colomoscopies. If you had not had any polyps you may have been able to wait another year or two. The person suggesting every 5 years doesn't understand the concerns with your diseases.
