O you or did you have an underactive thyroid...?!

Question:

O you or did you have an underactive thyroid...?

what where the symptoms
how soon did you find out you had it
how soon did the medication start to work
and how did it affect you weight?

Answers:

I was born with a non-functioning thyroid so I've been on meds since I was 10 days old (I'm 26.) I was tested in California through their newborn screening program.

I stopped taking my meds a few times and I noticed a difference within 2 days. I was exhausted, moody, had some confusion and difficulty concentrating, was bloating by the end of the week...never again!

I also have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and years of depression and anxiety which several MD's have said may be linked to my hypothyroidism.
I have had a miscarriage, a complicated pregnancy that did make it to term, and an inability to conceive since then (4 years ago.)

The medication takes up to 4 weeks to be at full effect the first time you start to take it, but you may begin to feel better by the end of the first week.

Underactive thyroid usually does cause weight gain, but don't expect the medication to be a miracle "diet pill." I was actually underweight until my early twenties then I packed on the pounds. I still have difficulty taking it off.
