Question: My daughter has been on anti-biotics for two weeks now, I am concerned because she has got an itch down below?
Answers:
yes antibiotics do cause thrush. you can buy over the counter remedies at pharmacy called canesten ( cream , tablet or pessary } it all depends on daughters age and yes natural greek yoghurt very good if put on a tampon then inserted inside
Your friend is right, prolonged use of anti-biotics can lead to thrush.
Thrush is a bacteria infection, and natural yoghurt will only lessen the itching, it won't completely rid her of it.
You need to go back to your doctors and make sure it is only thrush before you go buying over the counter products.
Good Luck
You should take her back to the doctor. The few times I have taken antibiotics I have ended up with a crazy yeast infection. Get her doctor's opinion before you go buying anything.
I will come over to your house and determine what is wrong immediately
Yes it's thrush. Get a pill and cream from the chemist. Forget the yogurt.
Obviously a doctor that can see your daughter is going to give you the most accurate information. However, it is well known that antibiotics and especially a long course of them it can create a yeast infection which will cause the vagina to itch. Antibiotics kill the good and bad bacteria in our bodies. Antibiotics kill bacteria — which is great news if you have pneumonia but not so good if the antibiotics also kill off the beneficial bacteria that live in your body. When this type of overkill occurs, it can clear the way for yeast to overgrow and for a yeast infection to develop.
As for treating a yeast infection with antibiotics, "A yeast infection will not respond to antibiotics, because antibiotics can’t kill yeast." On the other hand, antibiotics might help your symptoms if the itching is caused by a bacterial infection. Metronidazole (Flagyl) and clindamycin (Cleocin) are antibiotics that are prescribed most often to treat itching caused by bacterial infection.
As your friend recommended go to your local health food store and ask for a high powered Probiotic for someone that has been on antibiotics. This should start to replace your daughter's healthy gut flora. Fermented foods are good too such as sauerkraut, and miso soup. And of course, yogurt and kefir (an indian fermented dairy drink sold at most health food stores like Whole Foods) as well. Eat plain yogurt that contains live yogurt cultures, or apply plain yogurt directly to the vagina. This can help fight infection and soothe inflammation. Also consume brown rice, millet, and acidophilus.
