Question:

Cough that comes in spasms, no mucus, sounds like a seal bark and vibates down to my chest - what causes it?

Answers:

You didn't say how long you've had this. If you have just developed it-it could be an infectious process like bronchitis, atypical bronchitis-what gramma used to call "walking pneumonia", whooping cough (yes-you've had the vaccine but it wears off and when you get it as an adult it is not as severe as with children), allergies, or some sort of viral infection. If you have had this long term it may be asthma or chronic bronchitis/emphysema. You didn't say if you smoked (that won't help it!!). If you have just developed it but it has lasted 5 or more days or you have a fever or are short of breath you should see your provider within the next day or two. They can listen to your chest, maybe do some xrays or a blood test. If you have not had it for too long-treat it like you would a cold or other viral infection-over the counter cough/cold preperations (if you don't have any other medical problems), lots of fluid, humidifier, vitamin C etc. Hope you feel better soon.
