I know because I've had a long term girlfriend and a brother who happened to get cold sores. Yes, while doctors say there is a slim possibility of getting cold sores from a kiss (or drinking from the same glass) when no sore is present, I never did. The whole pharmaceutical industry more likely just wants to sell more drugs and scare people!!
While kissing supposedly offers a tiny chance of getting a disease, you also take that SAME CHANCE every time you eat dinner out. The previous person to use that fork, glass, or spoon could have had ACTIVE cold sores for all you know - maybe the dish washer wasn't run?? Maybe someone touched their sore then touched your glass. You never know!!
So instead of living your whole life in fear, don't be afraid to kiss someone when a cold sore isn't present. By the time we die, almost 90% of us will have acquired the herpes simplex virus anyway. Only a small % of those people actually get occasional cold sores.
Typically, the only way you are going to contract oral herpes (cold sores), is if your immune system is CRITICALLY LOW - as in you are a newborn baby, or a super old person, or have AIDS. If you are decently healthy at all, you won't get cold sores - even from kissing someone with an active sore or drinking from the same glass! If you aren't healthy, getting a cold sore is the least of your worries. So keep your babies away from people with cold sores, but until then.....
