Anyone have Crohn's disease?!

Question: Anyone have Crohn's disease?
I have been ill for the past 2 years. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease and Hyperthyroidism last year. After being on medication for a year now my problems are continuing. I have major heart palpitations, fever, extreme stomach pain, stiffness and soreness in my joints, vomiting, diarrhea/and/or/constipation. I had been ill at one point for about 3 days and at the end of that 3 days I had a bowel movement that was completely black as well as vomiting black and green bile. I went to the hospital and tested positive for blood in my stool. They had admitted me into the hospital. Another doctor came in and performed the same stool exam and she was small with these little tiny fingers that were barely 2 inches long lol. She said I didn't have any blood in my stool and treated me like I was making it up. She said that you don't just bleed and stop bleeding for no reason. Ok. Even though just a few hours before another doctor with extremely long fingers lol said that I was positive. The next group of doctors came in and said that I had a tumor on my liver. Said since I had the blood in my stool they were concerned and ran a scan. No tumor. I asked them if they were sure about the blood in my stool and I had explained the situation with the previous doctors and they said that it is possible to stop bleeding depending on my problem. Not knowing what my problem was they couldn't say why I had stopped bleeding, just that I had.

Well for the next 5 or 6 months I had entered the hospital with the same issues about 4 times. Minus the blood in the stool. All of the same issues each time I went in. The group of doctors who were concerned about the bleeding were the doctors who came to see me. They said my hyperthyroidism wasn't what was causing the problems and said that it sounded as though I had Crohn's disease. They all looked at each other and said, "crohn's? crohn's? crohn's" and then all agreed on Crohn's. Said I would need more tests to confirm.

It's been a few weeks since then. I've finally got insurance. So I made an appointment with my regular doctor and she said that the records say I had the flu. There's no mention of Crohn's. She said it's probably just gas. She said my scope results mention some abrasions but she didn't say where and the MRI I had said that the mass on my liver was gone. It must have been a fatty substance that corrected itself. I'm sick with vomiting like every other day. Sometimes several days go by before I feel better. I still have the occasional black stool. Not all the time. Just occasionally. My regular doctor also said that it's my Hyperthyroidism that's causing me all these issues. The doctors at the hospital said my levels for my thyroid are normal. My thyroid doctor had come in to see me in the hospital and also said my thyroid isn't what is causing the issues.

Is it possible to have Crohn's without bleeding constantly? If not then what would make someone bleed one minute and not the next? I find it hard to believe that I have the flu every other day. Nor do I think the flu would make me have blood in my stool in the amounts that I was getting. Please help. I'm at a loss. I don't know where to go or what to do about anything. I cannot get a straight answer to save my life.

Also, is the fact that I have crappy health insurance a factor on how they treat me?

Answers:

Two glands are involved with the thyroid..the pituitary
gland (makes TSH or Thyroid stimulating hormone)
in the brain and the thyroid gland (makes Thyroxine,
T4,T3). The pituitary gland, when the thyroid makes
too much thyroid hormone, will stop producing the
TSH which usually stimulates the thyroid to make more
of the Thyroxine. If this isn't being controlled well
by the medication you are given and showing that on
your blood testing...them you may have the symptoms
of Heart palpatations and some of the other
symptoms. You may want to see an
Endocrinologist about this, if you feel your regular
doctor isn't handling this appropriately.

The liver is the main organ of metabolism. Therefore,
the higher amount of Thyroid hormone in the blood can
cause your liver to work harder. And it also has an
effect on other organs of your body, also. No one
test, whether it is film testing like an ultrasound, Ct scan,
MRI, or even the blood tests are 100% accurate. It
also depends alot on who looks at your films to give the
result. Sometimes a shadow may appear on a film and
with further testing...what they originally thought it was,
it wasn't.

The Thyroid would not have an affect on your bowels to
cause bleeding. If the blood was bright red...it may be
a fisture or hemorrhoid..

If it is darker in color, then it
may be higher up in the intestines where the problem is.
If they did a colonoscopy.....

..the gastroenterologist would
have looked directly at your intestinal insides with a scope;
but would only be able to see the colon (large intestines).
If they would give you a pill to swallow (that has a camera)
inside...they may be able to see the whole digestive
system this way.

Crohns or ulcerative colitis is a rare disease and they
do not yet understand what causes them.

However, a gastroenterologist should be able to tell for
certain if a patient has these disease by doing the testing I
mentioned above. You mentioned having diarrhea
and also constipation...having both of these could
signify an Irritable bowel syndrome.

I feel that it may be worth, taking all the films you had
done and a copy of your medical records and have
another specialist look at them. Preferably at one
of the top hospitals in your area. Many times they
can see more than what is seen at the local
facilities.

Black stools can come from iron pills, if you are taking
them.

I hope you soon will be able to get the answers you
need. I believe I would tell, whatever doctor you
are talking to at any one time, the differences in
what everyone is saying. Your doctors should be
working together in your care...and it doesn't sound
like that is being done.

Best wishes
