Anyone take Anti-D or Anti-Anxiety meds for IBS?!

Question:

Anyone take Anti-D or Anti-Anxiety meds for IBS?

My research shows that tricyclic Anti-Depressents or anti-anxiety meds can help alleviate IBS symptoms, but I am afraid to go on an Anti-Depressent for its side effects.

Stephanie gave a great answer - I will add that I am currently on 20mg of Nortriptyline, which is a low dose considering those who take it for depression often take more than 100mg daily. For me, it greatly reduces the nausea and pain from cramping (as a result of my fructose intolerance). It has a constipating effect, which I have alleviated with polyglycol. It also makes me quite tired - I need 9 hours of sleep per day to function well. Nonetheless, the aggregate benefits greatly outweigh the problems for me.
