Stem cell transplant????!

Question:

Stem cell transplant????

my motheris in hosp after getting her own stem cells put back into her she has myeloma cancer of the bone morrow how long will she get from this treatment?? as they took extra for when she relaps....

Answers:

The stem cell transplant isn't actually itself a treatment for multiple myeloma. Instead, it's a way of allowing the doctors to use much higher doses of chemo/radiotherapy than they could otherwise use. The chemo- and/or radiotherapy is what kills the myeloma cells, but it also kills off healthy bone marrow. By saving healthy stem cells and putting them back into your mum, they can help the immune system recover faster from high-dose chemo or radiotherapy.

Whether or not she'll relapse depends on how sensitive the myeloma is to chemo-/radiotherapy, not on the stem-cell transplant itself. I hope she does well - wish her luck for me!
