Question: My 5 year old has a sugar level of 138 and a1c of 5.9 what does this mean?
father is a type 1 , son levels at fasting were 126 and fasting another day of 138
test came back today with a1c of 5.9 should i be worried?

Answers:

Normal fasting blood sugar should be under 99 mg/dL. Infections, illness, and medication can temporarily elevate blood sugar in non-diabetics, but if your son is repeatedly testing in diabetic fasting range (defined as >126 mg/dl) and doesn't have any of the aforementioned conditions, then that's very concerning.

An A1c of 5.9% is borderline. 5.7%-6.4% is considered "pre-diabetic" and an A1c over 6.5% is definitively diabetic.

You may be confused because the term "pre-diabetic" usually applies to Type 2 diabetics. Because your son is five years old, and because his father is Type 1, we can be fairly confident that he's not Type 2. He may, however, be a honeymooning Type 1. Honeymooning simply means that the pancreas hasn't stopped producing insulin yet. This phase can last days, months, and even years. Some days your son may have normal blood sugar and other days, well, not so much. If your son had zero insulin production, his fasting levels would be much, much higher.

I'm not qualified to make a diagnosis, but I'd say tentatively that you should be worried. His two fasting tests were in diabetic range and his A1c indicates that his blood sugar is slightly elevated, in pre-diabetic range. This is a critical time because, if he is Type 1, he'll need insulin at some point in the near future, and I don't want you or your son to be caught off guard when that happens. Also, when the pancreas stops making insulin, blood sugar will climb to dangerous levels.

I hope his doctor is ordering more tests to measure his insulin levels and to check whether he has GAD antibodies present (marker of Type 1 diabetes), especially given the genetic history involved.

I have no idea what a1c is, although you shouldn't be too worried. Normal sugar levels for someone without diabetes is lower than 70. Even lower than 100 should suffice. However 138 for a non diabetic is just slightly above average. Usually people are above 200 when diagnosed, so you shouldn't be too worried.

Sugar level is slightly high.

However, the average range for a1c level is between 4% and 6%.

I don't think you have much to worry about. But I am not a doctor. If you are worried, take her/him to the doc and see what they say.
