Monroe piercing irritated by lakewater?!

Question:

Monroe piercing irritated by lakewater?

i got my monroe about two weeks ago. on the piercing aftercare sheet that i was given, it said "not to submerge the piercing in bacteria infested waters including the ocean, pools, or lakes". however, today i went inner-tubing on a lake. i didn't fall off, so the piercing didn't get completely submerged, but it got splashed a LOT. now, it's red and burning, and i'm pretty sure it's infected. the aftercare sheet told me not to use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on it because it would ruin the piercing. what should i clean this with to get rid of the infection and kill the bad bacteria?

Answers:

If it is infected you would have swelling, redness, yellow-green pus like discharge, and sensitivity to touch. If it is infected, leave the jewelry in to ensure proper drainage and visit your piercer for advice.

For the burning and redness:
Wash your hands with soap before cleaning the piercing. Use anti-bacterial soap to clean the jewelry only in the shower, and rinse well. Do non-iodized sea salt soaks 2-3 times per day. The correct proportion is 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to 8 ounces of warm water.

Lavender oil also helps with if the piercing becomes dry; it also promotes healing, lubricates the piercing, and reduces tenderness. Just make sure to dilute it (1-2 drops in warm water).

Don’t ever use hydrogen peroxide, betadine, alcohol swabs, or alcohol-based cleansers on the piercing. They are very harsh and dry out your skin prolonging the healing period. Choose an antibacterial mouthwash that does not contain alcohol and rinse your mouth after all meals and snacks. NEVER use an ointment like neosporin it keeps your piercing to moist, causing bacteria to spread. Neosporin prevents oxygen from reaching the wound. It is not designed for use on healing piercings.

Hope your monroe gets better!
