Can someones heart actually move from their chest and lay on their stomach?!

Question:

Can someones heart actually move from their chest and lay on their stomach?

My father has COPD and his lungs have almost totally collaped. the last couple x-rays showed that his heart is shifting downward. He has recently had a mild heart attack, and the doctors did an angioplasi which the results showed that his heart has droped and is now sitting just above his stomach. Can someone help me understand what exactly is happening to my dad, and maybe give me some advice.

Answers:

A lot of things can be happening. COPD is not a fun thing to have. Because your Dad's lungs are changing, things around it are changing. The heart sits right inbetween the lungs, usually pointed to the left and downward. If the apex (bottom of the heart) is shifting downwards, that means that your dad's lungs are getting bigger. With COPD, people have to work harder to breathe which in turn makes their lungs bigger. That's also what creates a barrel chest. Since the lungs are getting bigger, his heart is probably getting pushed down onto his diaphram, which makes everyone intake air and seperates the abdominal cavity with the chest cavity. Best thing to do is listen to the doctors and do what they say. I wish you and your dad the best of luck.
