There's a very high correlation between IDU's (injection drug users) and HIV infection. You may be able to find satistics at the CDC (Center for Disease Control) or the website of your local health department. These cases are mostly documented. Now your specific question referred to Heroin but not the route of use. I am assuming you meant Intravenous heroin use. I have also attended a seminar about it where the type of heroin predisposes someone to share needles and works. I am referring to Black Tar Heroin where it is bought in chunks. Now, since chunks can't be divided equally among peers, they first melt it, draw it up with syringe and then backload it to another syringe and in the process, infection transmission can increase.
