There are no exact tell tale signs of HIV/AIDS. The thing is, if you wait until you see signs of this, then it might be to late for you.
The good news is, HIV shows up in a person within 6 months of infecting. If you have not had sex in a while, get tested. If it shows negative, then you are in the clear. Then remember to use a condom with your partners so you don't have this fear anymore.
The reason people think that HIV is dormant for at least ten years is because most people don't get tested on a regular basis. The person that said they got infected 10 years ago and it just showed up, has not been tested until then.
Your best bet is, if you are going to have unprotected sex, get tested at least once a year. If they find HIV in your body when you are first infected, there are excellent studies and meds out there so you can lead a normal life.
