Would I have a chance of getting diabetes?!

Question: Would I have a chance of getting diabetes?
I'm 15, very active with softball, & when I went to the doctor I was told I am about 5 pounds overweight. I'm working on that with a new low-carb eating plan. But my mom had gestational diabetes, & i constantly worry that I'll get type 2 diabetes and it really scares me. Since my mom had it when she was pregnant, does that make me at a higher risk?

Answers:

Since it's just gestational, very low risk. What about other members in your family? Also, you may have a chance of having gestational diabetes when pregnant.

Yes, you do have an elevated risk. You should have a hemoglobin A1c blood test every year.

It is not a one-way trip. If your weight leads to insulin resistance, then if you lose the weight, the insulin resistance will diminish back to where you would have been if you had been that weight all the time.

Let me put that another way: Don't panic about your weight. If your weight leads to type 2 diabetes, then you can lose the weight and your sugar will normalize.

I'm not suggesting that you gain dozens of pounds, but you don't need to be overly thin to control type 2 diabetes.

No if your active and exercise then you won't get it. 5lbs overweight isn't that bad, but still lose it, remember DIETS DON'T WORK!!!! Anything in excess isn't good, anything in moderation can be though read learn about it. But your not in a higher risk. Most women get it when their pregnant then it goes away, my mom's diabetes didn't. I'm at a higher risk because it runs in the family, if it runs in the family and your mom still has it then your at a higher risk.

Hope this helps

Me! Personal expierence.

Pregnancy diabetes does go away (however ladies should get checked again within 5 years because it might sneak back). And pregnancy diabetes is the ONLY sort which goes away, the other types (I and II) do not. You get one or the other and it is for life. The can be controlled with medication, healthy eating habits and exercise. Still, if there is diabetes in you family history, you are at greater risk of getting it.

Gestational diabetes is rare. Type 2 is the most common, it occurs after 35-40 ages. You can try to avoid it by exercising and eating healthy foods.

Don't worry u will not get diabetes as u r not too much overweight
