How to get rid of dry, flaky skin?!

Question: How to get rid of dry, flaky skin?
I've had a dry, flaky skin for years now, and I've never known how to fix it. It usually gets worse around winter, because that's when it's most cold out and the air is dry, but nothing seems to fix it.

I put lotion on my face every time I see a patch of flakes, but the flakes return less than an hour later. I've used olive oil, and facial moisturizers, but nothing seems to be working.

It really sucks; I can't even wear foundation or concealer to cover blemishes because my skin is always so dry, the makeup doesn't go on smoothly, and it cakes up in individual spots because of how dry my skin is. I know if my skin was moisturized and smooth, the makeup would go on perfectly.

By the way, I don't have eczema, or anything. My skin's just really dry.

Can someone help me, please?

Answers:

Do you exfoliate? If you don't already I think that alone I will help you a lot.

I'd suggest...make sure your showers are brief. Use only mild soaps on your face and body. Soaps suitable for sensitive skin and/ or babies is a place to start. I suggest you go for simpler, more natural soaps. I guess soap doesn't occur in nature, but you know what I mean I hope. I suggest staying away from stuff with added "fragrance" or things that claim to have added moisturizer. And definitely no acne washes or anything like that! (I don't think they work well anyway.) And you don't need to soap up your whole body every time you shower...

Every time you take a shower, take a wet wash cloth and go over your skin thoroughly to get off any dead skin. (that's how I like to exfoliate anyway) On your face keep it gentle. After the shower, towel dry and immediately apply olive oil to your skin and leave it on, don't wipe or wash it off. I use enough to give my skin a greasy feel, but it all gets absorbed after a while, leaving my skin feeling moisturized and super soft!

If you must wash your face more than once a day, don't do it more than twice. Rinse the soap off promptly and moisturize with olive oil as soon as possible after washing. Eating healthy and drinking lots of water might help too!

Hope this is in some way helpful.
