Why do i have Dark Green/browny phlegm?!

Question: Why do i have Dark Green/browny phlegm?
Ok, so i've had pharyngitis for quite a while (months), and now all of a sudden i have a bad cold. there is alot of phlegm on my chest, and when i cough it up, its a dark green/browny colour. but when it comes from my nose its gots streaks of red in it. when i blow my nose its just a normal yellow colour, with lumps of dark red in it. What could i have?

p.s - i'm 19 years old, living in a warm climate atm, and i'm always sick (i.e - bronchitis, pharyngitis, colds, sinitus)

Just for yourself, it's always risky to be asking for medical advice on the internet - especially on Yahoo answers! You never know who could respond with what made up answer.

But with that caveat aside, greenish phlegm suggests a bacterial infection. The fact that there's red streaks in your nasal discharge could be simply that the inside of your nose has become abraded and is bleeding slightly, likely from blowing your nose too much.

But as with all of these health questions, you should try and see a doctor about it. Only they can do a physical exam on you, and culture your sputum to see what bacteria we're dealing with. They can also look to see that there aren't any stranger causes for this.

You have a sinus infection for sure, but from your description it sounds like you have pneumonia. I think you need to see a doctor right away.

You have an infection, that's why it's dark green/brown. You might need antibiodics to clear it up. And when you blow it & see the streaks of red in it it's just because the nose has A LOT of little blood vessles in it that are easy to break, so you might just have a dry nose from winter, that's very normal. It's coming out the normal yellow when you blow your nose because that is mucus from the nasal cavity, & there is nothing wrong with your nose. The coughing of dark green/brown mucus is coming from your lungs, bronchi or pharynx (throat), which is where the infection is. You have pharyngitis which medically means "throat infalamtion", so yeah-- You have an infection going on. Getting sick with pharyngitis caused your immune system to weaken which allowed the infection to build up over time, now your body is just trying to cough it out so you can get better & cleared up. That warm weather is also helping the phlegm break up better, which is why you're coughing a lot of it up. Just see a doctor to be safe, you might want to get antibiodics in your system for a few days.
