I need advice for croup?!

Question: I need advice for croup?
HI
My daughter has croup for the first time. She's doing ok, but when the cough comes it's really bad. Plus, she has strider (the high pitched breathing noise).
I called her Dr's office 30 minutes ago. They are not on call so I had to call another group. No one has called me back yet.
I'm not one to worry, but my nephew has a very bad history with croup and ended up in a coma for 2 weeks once with what started as a moderate case of croup.
30 minutes doesn't sound long, but it's a lifetime. Plus, it's not my regular Dr's office, which makes me nervous. Should I call back, take her to the er? She only has shortness of breath with the cough and right before.

Answers:

The best thing you can do for her while you're waiting for the call back is to take her into the shower or turn the shower on and go into the bathroom with her. The humidified air will her her to breathe more easily. Croup looks and sounds a lot more scary than it is.
Time does pass very slowly when we're waiting for that call. Whether you wait to speak with the on call Doc or go to the ER, it is still not her Pediatrician. If you hear nothing and it has been 60 minutes, call back.
Your nephew was an exception to the rule as far as croup is concerned.

I hope your daughter is feeling better quickly!
