Have Genital Herpes but don't know how I got it?!

Question: Have Genital Herpes but don't know how I got it?
Okay, so this might take a minute. To be blunt, I have Genital Herpes. My first outbreak appeared right after my 14th birthday about a month after I started my first period (I was a virgin and had never even KISSED anyone before) but at the time I didn't know what it was and was embarrassed, so I didn't tell my mom. It went away after about two weeks.

A year later, it reappeared. I finally told my mom and she looked at it but didn't know what it was - we were out of state visiting family at the time and by the time we got back in town to see a doctor it had disappeared.

A year later, it appeared again and she took me in to the doctor who swabbed the sores and came back with the results that it was herpes. It's type 1 and I used to get outbreaks once a year, but now I get them about every two and a half years.

So the thing that's always confused me was how I got it in the first place? I didn't even have my first kiss or make out session until my 16th birthday - three years AFTER my first outbreak. I was never raped or molested as a child (my current husband actually took my virginity) and I had never had any sexual contact with anyone. Is there another way you can get it? I've read that you can't get it from toilet seats or anything, but really I'm at a loss.

It's coming up on my ten year anniversary of having it and I think the worst part is not knowing what I did to get it in the first place :(

No you're unlikely to get it from an object or toilet seat because the virus doesn't last for more then seconds once it leaves the body. You could possibly be born with it if your mother had a break out at the time she gave birth to you. You're also not likely to get genital herpes from just kissing. You're unlikely to get genital herpes with out having some kind of sexual activity like receiving oral sex or having intercourse. If you weren't sexually active at the time then it may not be herpes. If you ever had a cold sore before that could also make your test turn positive for HSV1 (oral herpes) which is the virus that causes cold sores. I think you should get a second opinion and if or when it comes back, have the break out tested again.

WOW! I don't have an answer for you because I have no clue how that could happen. But I know how you feel. The same thing happened to me! And what a coincidence, I was 14 too! It really sucks, but at least you don't break out that much, I do around 2 times a month :(

I have genital herpes too. I think i have an answer. If you have a cold sore or fever blister and touch your privates, the virus can be transferred there.
