You can stop this medication abruptly, the half life of this medication is actually quite long and can stay with you for months after taking your last dose. This medication is not without risk, some of them very serious. This medication is used for more life threatening arrhythmia's coming from the large chambers of the heart (ventricles), some Physicians do use this for atrial dysrhythmia's like A-Fib more so for someone that has had to undergo Cardioversion (use of electricity to get the heart back in Sinus) to prevent a return to A-Fib. Depending on the cause of A-Fib, different treatments are rendered. Long term medications would be more of the Beta Blockers (Metoprolol, Lopressor), Calcium Channel Blocker (Diltiazeim), Digoxin and Coumadin (Blood Thinner).
I myself would be thrilled to be off of this medication secondary to all the side affects and risks. Watch the caffeine (to include chocolate), stimulants (diet pills, herbal energizers, over the counter cold medications), alcohol and nicotine; these can trigger a repeat episode of A-Fib. Take all medications as prescribed, or stop as prescribed and follow up with your doctor for concerns and re-evaluation. Return to the ER for rapid, irregular heartrate/rhythm, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain.
