What are the causes of Pompholyx?!

Question: What are the causes of Pompholyx?
For most of the 3 years I had spent with my previous girlfriend I had pompholyx. My doctor explained that pompholyx was caused by leaving my finger in a warm moist environment for continuous periods, she prescribed a steroid cream which controled the itching but never cured it. I have subsequently been seeing someone else and the pompholyx has vanished. My sexual practices are normal and are no different with both women.
My previous girlfriend did suffer from bacterial vaginosis. Could this be the cause?
The literature on the internet is very limited.

Pompholyx is also called dyshidrosis. It is caused by an internal fungal, bacterial or yeast infection, not by touching anything infected. It is common on the feet. You need a dermatologist to prescribe 'Toctino'. A potent retinoid drug (RA cis 9).

Pompholyx is caused by abnormal sweating. Pompholyx can occur in any type of breed secondary to other skin disorders, but the inherited primary form is seen almost exclusively in the dachshund. The condition may be mild with only a little peeling, or very severe with big blisters and cracks which prevent work. Pompholyx is aggravated by contact with irritants such as water, detergents and solvents.
Common causes and risk factors of Pompholyx:
Emotional stress or grief.
Infection at a distant site e.g. the feet or scalp.
Scratching.
Use of certain detergents in washing dishes or clothes.
