Why is my Humulin S giving me watery stools?!

Question: Why is my Humulin S giving me watery stools?
Gross question, I know but I'm baffled. Have been on the longer acting Humulin I for a few months with no problems. Was given Novorapid, but had a bad allergic reaction. Now I'm taking Humulin S, and I seem to get very watery stools every time I take it. Have spoken to the Diabetes team, but they've never heard of it either. Has anyone else had the same problem? Can my body just not handle short acting insulin? I'm pregnant and worried that all of this will affect my baby.

It may be a simple side effect of Humulin s. Most prescription drugs have bowel related side effects.
Everyone handles medication differently and it can possibly be the dosage you take is too high or the food you consume is spicy or not easily digestible. Ask your diabetes MD and read the leaflet/print out from the pharmacy per FDA there would be a list of possible side effects to any medication

it is probably from changing around the insulins so rapidly.

and since this is everytime you inject, this is every day, so it really cn't be blamed entirely on insulin.

But then again most doctors, nurses, etc, do NOT read all the testing results on any medication they foist on the public. They simply do not have time. So they are sure to say "I never heard of that before". There are lots of side effects repoorted to the control agencies such as FDA that doctors and nurses never bother to read.

Not sure about the effect on baby, but do try to keep grams of carb to minimum so insulin is minimum as well.

Why did they change you from something that was working to a different manufacturer then to a different fast acting insulin? I know that the Levemir that the insurance company would pay for did nothing for me, and then I found out that people who took Lantus should NOT be changed to Levemir.

Now I am back to the Lantus and the Humalog (lispro) and a bit happier, but with no control at all.

I've never heard of this happening before. Have you talked to the endocrinologist himself? Lots of times the nurses don't pass on the message to the doctor. Talk to your OB/GYN about it effecting the baby. In fact, she might be able to tell you why you have watery stools.

Hope this helps!

this causes gi irritation but should be transient. wait about a month, if there is no improvement, ask to be switched to a less harsh drug.
