With appropriate treatment (a full course of antibiotics taken exactly as directed by your doctor), the infection should go away within a week or 2 at the most. There are no home remedies or OTC medications that will cure a UTI. Drinking water and cranberry juice can help prevent UTI, but will not cure UTI. Taking AZO can help reduce symptoms temporarily, but will not cure the infection. The only way to cure the infection is to take antibiotics exactly as directed by your doctor. Take all of the medication. If left untreated, the infection will spread and cause kidney damage and other serious problems. You need to see a doctor.

An untreated urinary tract infection may become chronic. Similarly, under dose of antibiotic treatment may result in "antibiotic resistant type" of infection. It is advised to do a urine culture and antibiotic sensitivity test before starting on any antibiotic. The best sensitive antibiotic must be selected and a full course must be given.
