Wanna play "Diagnose that Illness?!

Question: Wanna play "Diagnose that Illness?
Symptoms include: Mild to moderate but persistent sore throat for past 24 hours, itchy ears with poor drainage for past 48 hours, swollen lymph nodes, red, mildly swollen throat, creamy white patches at back of mouth/throat, occasional difficulty swallowing.

I'm hoping this is just some viral infection that I can treat by staying hydrated and getting enough rest. But if it's something a little more serious, I need to have it diagnosed this weekend in order to avoid missing classes Monday. Yet at the same time, I don't want to get a formal diagnosis unless I have to, as it's pretty dangerous for me to have my throat swabbed. My gag reflex causes me to become aggressive, which could result in needing the Heimlich maneuver to get the nurse's cotton swab back.

Answers:

I'm sorry to hear that you have so much trouble with throat swabs, but it does sound like you need to see a doctor to get an appropriate diagnosis. No one, even a doctor, can diagnose you through a computer, and many of us on YA are not medical professionals, so we are not qualified to diagnose or treat you. I hope you feel better soon!

It sounds kind of like strep throat. It goes around this time of year. Go to the doctor and they should prescribe some antibiotics for it. Get well!
