How soon after exposure is it possible to transmit the influenza virus?!

Question: How soon after exposure is it possible to transmit the influenza virus?
I found out at the end of my shift today that the little girl I'd been working with had tested positive for influenza A (and was being moved to isolation). I know that the incubation period for influenza in an adult is ~1-4 days, but can't seem to find information on how soon after exposure I can pass it on.
I'm supposed to be working with a group of teens tonight, and looking after my 2-year-old niece tomorrow (just for the record, already passed on that I won't be able to do the latter).
