Question: Need help with sentence with a medical term in it!?
im reading an article on Dr. Ben Carson and a sentence says, "the first intrauterine procedure to relieve pressure on the brain of a hydrocephalic fetal twin." What does that mean? the first intrauterine procedure? in this sentence. i looked it up and all im getting is about insemnation of sperm which i know is not what this sentence is talking about.

Answers:

It's referring to a surgery to open a pregnant woman's uterus, partially deliver the pre-term fetus, place a shunt to drain the buildup of intracranial fluid, then restore the fetus, close the womb, and hope the fetus makes it to term. There are several prenatal surgeries performed these days:

Intrauterine = inside the uterus
Hydrocephalic = too much brain fluid accumulating in the skull
So, the first time a doctor performed surgery on a fetus, to relieve pressure inside the fetus's skull, while the fetus was still inside the pregnant woman.
