Question: I think im allergic to my new kitty! i adopted her today!!!! can i minimize the reaction?
i absolutely fell in love with this kitten at the humane society, i was planing to get a kitty forever, and a while after i brought her home, my face got a little red and i feel as if there are little bumps on my chin! i cant take the kitten back, im too much in love with it, and my dad paied a lot of money to adopt from the humane society....what should i do??? i think its cause i got her hair in my nose....its not bad, its just my face is kinda red and its bothersome. what should i do to minimize the reaction? should i cover my hands or face whenever i pet her?can i build a tolerance to this??? thank you soo much!!!

The allergy is to the dander which comes from a protein in the cat's saliva. When the cat cleans itself the saliva can act as a coating that kind of waterproofs the fur alittle. The best thing to do is give the kitten weekly baths to cut down on the build up of dander. Wash your hands after petting and playing with her and try to remember to not touch your face. An anti allergy medicine, such as Zyrtec, can help too.

cat dander. find an antihistamine over the counter.

You can keep her. You should follow these guidelines if you want to keep your allergies at bay: Wash your hands constantly, keep her and your hands from your face, keep her out of your bedroom, don't get down on the ground with her. You also will want to keep the clothes you have on as far away from your bed as possible, and shower before you go to bed to get any allergens off. Wash your sheets frequently. Vacuum frequently. Dust and clean your furniture frequently. Go to an allergist, get on shots and medication if you aren't already on them.

And most of all, have fun with your new furry friend!

I know a lot of that sounds like you won't have much fun with the kitten. However, if you want to stay symptom free, you will need to start doing what is listed above. I let my cat sleep with me when i first got her. I woke up in the middle of the night, multiple times, blowing my nose and washing my eyes out. They would be so swollen in the morning I would have to sit with a warm damp cloth over my eyes to get the swelling down. I promise you if you follow these guidelines, you and your kitty will live happily ever after.

Oh, the shots will help you build a tolerance.

100% allergy to cats.
