Am I prediabetic or diabetic right now?!

Question: Am I prediabetic or diabetic right now?
I was told I was pre-diabetic a year ago and my doctor prescribed medication (metformin). Since then, all the tests I have done have been while on medication. I want to know what my real numbers are now and do not want the medication to lower my numbers, but show the real tolerance my body has to glucose without any aid. .

What I mean is that a year ago I was prediabetic (with no meds), and right now my numbers show prediabetes (with medication). I do not know if that means that I would be diabetic if I didn′t take the medication. The thing is that next test I want to find out if I am really diabetic, I do not want to keep on measuring the effectiveness of metformin (medication) but find out if I developed or not diabetes.

Answers:

Cookie , you are one of the few that have a great doctor. Most do not treat a pre diabetic. If your numbers are pre diabetic with Metformin then you probably would be classified as a full blown diabetic. But this has no meaning one way or the other. With your numbers you are controlling glucose levels. That is what counts.

Stop the obsession about whether you are diabetic. Remember , pre diabetic is diabetic. You have a problem with glucose levels. Plain and simple. Thank goodness you have a doctor that treats this terrible disease. I wll give you the guide for good glucose numbers. You can take it or leave it . It is up to you. But one thing this is the best advice you will ever get.

There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels :

1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list.
2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph… This is a great site for info
3) Meds. Metformin to start. Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. They may kill you. Bone fractures, heart problems and what diabetics really don't need is that they change Bone Stem Cells to Fat Cells. Also never ever take Onglyza or Januvia . They can can inhibit the bodys immune system and let cancer spread.
4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

You take care

ASK your doctor how to get an accurate reading. Tell him your concerns on the meds and how to get a proper measurement.
