needed help with light desiging on stage!!!!!?!

ok am choreographing a dance next year and i have to do the light designing on stage.i have never done this before hence am clueless. can somebody tell me how to start off?i need basic tips. i need help with how to handle the equipment, which colors look best on stage, which colors r ideal to mix. if this helps- it is a dance piece that has 4 dance styles in it ....for the song thaye yeshoda there is classical and indian contemporary and for the song final showcase(step up) there is hip hop n western contemporary..........please help!!
