My blood count tests show high red blood cells and doctor said it is Polychaemia!

Question: My blood count tests show high red blood cells and doctor said it is Polychaemia Rubra Vera?
Ok my blood results show I have level of red blood cells and doctor said I have Polycythaemia Rubra Vera, gave me an information leaflet and told me to go back in SIX months for repeat tests just in case these ones are a fluke. Can blood tests be wrong? I am a little freaked as on looking on the internet it says this is a form of rare blood and bone marrow cancer. Can anyone help me at all with all of this? Why would the doctor say to go back in six months? Can the results be wrong? Should I go back to my doctors? Thanks in advance

I wouldn't worry at this time. Anytime someone has abnormal results, they will always repeat in a few months to make sure that this is an accurate result. Sometimes people will have a high count of cells, whether it is red blood cells or white blood cells, etc. and it will be due to something else. Sometimes if you are dehydrated, it can concentrate levels and give false high results. This is just an example.

It's hard to give advice because I don't know how high your count was or if there were any other abnormalities with your lab tests.

They usually treat polycythemia with routine therapeutic phlembotomies. Meaning they check your levels and every month or few months, bring you to a lab and have them take one unit of blood. This should keep your blood a little less concentrated and help.

Good luck, hope this helps!

Did you look at these two web sites. The second one being a discussion group has personal experiences.
If you are unable to settle and you need more advice go back to your doctor and talk to him/her or ask to be referred to a consultant.
It may be that the blood levels are at a primary stage and make it difficult to definitely confirm the onset of this condition. Whatever the current situation you need more information from a professional.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you.
