Tourette's has nothing to do with swearing. It's a tic disorder caused by misfiring neurons in the brain. Tics are involuntary movements and sounds like head jerking, jumping, sniffing, humming, etc.

So to answer your question, if someone with tourette's doesn't know a swear word, it wouldn't make a difference.

There are different severities of tourette syndrome:

A mild case might consist of tics like blinking alot, eye rolling, sniffing or coughing - most people with TS have it mildly.

A moderate case mightconsist of tics like arm or head jerking, foot stomping, louder vocal tics like humming or screaching (as well as mild tics)

A severe case might consist of echolalia or palilalia (repeating words), echopraxia (repeating gestures), running, jumping, screaming, etc. (as well as mild/moderate tics). - few people have such a severe case.

The symptom you are referring to is coprolalia, which is extremely rare and might occur in people with a very severe case. It's not swearing alot, it's just saying inappropriate things.

Hope that helps

I have moderate tourette's.

the idea that people with tourette's swear all the time is a huge misconception. The swearing often comes from the lack of impulse control that many people with tourette's have. so if they are feeling frustrated about something minor, they might scream a swear word because they don't have the control to suppress it. If they didn't know any swear words then they would probably just say what they were feeling, like if they saw someone wearing an ugly outfit, they might shout "ugly!" I saw one kid on a program who shouted random words like "carrot" or whatever.

diagnosed w/ tourette's when I was 8
