Foot and Mouth disease, do we over react?!

Question: Foot and Mouth disease, do we over react?
Ten years have passed since the Foot and Mouth epizoot in Britain. Mass culling and rural restrictions cost us Billions of pounds and thousands of people ruined.
But is it an over reaction forced on us by people like the EU. Most animals recover from the illness if it's left to run it's course and no outbreak lasts forever.....is the hysterical reaction officially demanded will necessary? You thoughts...

Answers:

Athames, It was indeed a sad occurrence when the government Of Great Britain got into the act, with Foot-and-Mouth Disease as the Blair Government forced the slaughter of about 2,000,000 head of animals simply because less than 1,500 had been diagnosed with FMD, a relatively benign disease from which two-thirds of afflicted animals survive, and which poses no threat to humans. In the process, Britain had forced many farmers out of business and ruined the land upon which the farmers and ranchers were dependent, thus forcing the land to lie fallow while it gradually recovers from the deliberate poisoning brought on by the chemicals added to the carcasses of the animals so as to start the fire of the open-field funeral pyres.
Now advance to earlier this month of February 2011 in China. Wednesday, February 9, 2011 for a Korea Foot and Mouth disease update: Concerns rise that culling may cause disaster. Minister Lee says reckless burial of infected livestock may result in widespread contamination. The reckless burial of cattle in an attempt to prevent the further spread of foot-and-mouth disease could trigger a massive environmental disaster, Environment Minister Lee Maan-ee said. The minister called for a thorough examination of the effect of the burials on the surrounding soil and environment to avoid economic and environmental damage. In his interview with the Chosun Ilbo on Monday, Lee expressed his concern that torrential rain, frequent between spring and summer, could wash away unstable soil.

Obviously there is continuing disease and concern. It is to be hoped that an appropriate course of action will ensue, free of any panic.
