cornified skin layer?!

Question: Cornified skin layer?
I have to do a project about it, and it is so confusing. I searched it up and there's not that much. Can someone please explain to me what it is and like it's function?

The upper layer of the skin where the cells have died, their cytoplasm has been replaced by keratin, a fibrous protein also found in nails and hair. Cornification gives the skin its protective waterproof quality.
