HIV is caused by a lentivirus, which is a virus with a long incubation period (takes a long time to become active). They deliver genetic information into the DNA of the host cell. What this means is they cause your immune system to fail by altering your DNA, making your immune system unable to recognize harmful infections. You don't actually die from aids, but from other harmful infections like pneumonia for example because your body cannot fight the infection.
