While am not a doctor, but if she had a fairly nasty asthma attack, then it is highly likely she will have another.
She should go see her doctor and look at her asthma management plan and asthma preventative medications. As you mother knows that she is allergic to the hamsters and other rodents, then she either needs to take a antihistamine before she goes to work, or she asks if she can do something else in the store.
I suffer from asthma and certain things can exacerbate the asthma, kitten fur, dog fur, horses and pollens from trees and plants. And it is very scary when having major attack, but half the management is either taking adequate antihistamines or avoiding of the cause.
If you are certain that hamster caused the allergic reactions avoid it for ever. Other wise only trial and error method should be followed to find the causative agent that caused you the allergy.
