Do I have head lice or dandruff?!

Question: Do I have head lice or dandruff?
I work in a preschool so I'm exposed to lice probably without even knowing it. I have long dark hair, and my scalp has been itching. I turned my head over the bathtub and brushed it and there were a few brown flakey things but absolutely no bugs. I brushed my hair over my black bedspread and saw several white flakey things. Nothing that looked or felt like eggs. I also parted my hair in several places and again found no bugs or eggs, only small white loose flakes. The only reason I'm beginning to think it may be something other than dandruff is because I have bumps on the back of my neck and my ears. But there is no other evidence of bugs in those areas. Should I just treat for dandruff? Or should I treat for both

Billie-Jean P,
From your description, it does not appear that you are infested, unless, that is, your dandruff has legs! However, it might be helpful if you have a family member or a close friend check your scalp and hair with a fine-toothed comb to ensure that you are not infested. You could, if you wish, do a treatment which is obtainable from your chemist both for infestation and afterwards, for dandruff.
