It can take many years for any symptoms to show up because AIDS, as you probably already know, stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. So,this virus is attacking your immune system, slowly breaking it down, until a pneumonia or a simple cold comes along and kills you. Depending on how strong your immune system is it may take many years for you to notice that you can't get rid of a simple cold or whatever.
