You should be checked by the doctor to rule out any heart problems. Heartburn doesn't have anything to do with your heart and will not lead to a heart attack.

If you are like my grandson, you eat large pieces of food and don't chew them well. You may drink soda with your meals which can lead to gas which can cause the pain in your shoulder and cause heartburn. Slow down when you are eating and chew your food well and cut up your meat into smaller pieces. You may want to limit soft drinks as these can be a problem. Here are a few more suggestions from the Mayo Clinic.

■Avoid tight-fitting clothing. Clothes that fit tightly around your waist put pressure on your abdomen and the lower esophageal sphincter.

■Avoid foods that trigger heartburn. Everyone has specific triggers. Common triggers such as fatty or fried foods, alcohol, chocolate, mint, hot sauce, pizza, garlic, onion and caffeine may make heartburn worse.

■Don't lie down after a meal. Wait at least two to three hours after eating before lying down or going to bed.

■Elevate the head of your bed. An elevation of about six to nine inches puts gravity to work for you. Placing wood or cement blocks under the feet of your bed at the head end. If it's not possible to elevate your bed, you can insert a wedge between your mattress and box spring to elevate your body from the waist up. Wedges are available at drugstores and medical supply stores.

■Don't smoke. Smoking decreases the lower esophageal sphincter's ability to function properly.

you may just have acid reflex. if TUMS help that is good, but if it is constantly happening you may have a worse case that needs medicine. it could also be an ulcer if you have been extremely stressed, but those are usually for older people.

Did you fail Biology? Heartburn is one thing, heart attack is another.
