Need a simple answer about toenail streak?!

Question: Need a simple answer about toenail streak?

I would just like to know something very simple. I know that toenail melanomas are presented as a streak in the nail, but my question is, does the "cancer" (black pigmentation) grown on the skin under the nail or does it pigment the nail like a mole in the matrix does? Simply answer "on skin" or "in nail" please. Thanks!

Nails and hair are dead and do not get cancer.
I have no idea where you get that melanoma presents as a streak in the nail.
