I sometimes cough more at times then at other times, why?

Probably, because of allergy.
Not sure of your age, but often blood pressure medication can cause a very aggravating cough that comes and goes. If you take such medication, there are alternatives that do not make you cough.
irritants cause people to cough. Whether they are internal factors (like the flu) or external factors (smoke).
