Vomiting - how to keep water down?!

Question: Vomiting - how to keep water down?
Our baby son has been vomiting and is struggling to keep anything down. We have taken him to the doctor who diagnosed a virus. We were advised to feed him water little & often but he keeps vomiting it back up again. Any suggestions?

Answers:

We have had this problem. Our daughter was eventually admitted to hospital as she was very dehydrated. The hospital told us the solution to getting water (or, rather, Dioralyte which is much better) in & keeping it in, and it worked. We expressed frustration at having not been told this solution by the doctor. The hospital said they had had 50 admissions that week and all the parents say that.

The solution:
- Buy some Dioralyte and make it up as directed on the packet
- Fill a 5 ml syringe (available from doctor/pharmacy or use the ones that come with Child Nurofen bottles).
- Give 5 ml every 10 minutes for the first hour. Then double the dose - 10 ml every 10 minutes.
- Try to squirt the syringe down the side of the mouth – if you direct it straight down the mouth you could make your baby gag if you squirt too hard or if she throws herself forward. Obviously, administer the 5 ml slowly – we gave about 0.5 to 1.0 ml at a time.

It worked - our baby didn’t vomit and she rehydrated.

You are giving him too much water and too fast. Get a clean eye dropper and a glass of water. Give him one eyedropper ful of water every 60 seconds. If he still vomits, then adjust to one eyedropper full of water every 120 seconds.

Experience. Been there, done that with my son.

You are giving water but, he's still not keeping it down. Try giving him 1 dropperful every 15 min. & see if he can keep that down. Mt concern is that he may dehydrate. So you may want to get some pedialyte. Hope he gets that little tummy settled soon.

I would suggest gatorade or pedialite. Something with electrolytes in it. If he cannot keep anything down, he is going to become dehydrated and he needs to replace the electrolytes he is losing.

three mint tea.....the mint will help soothe the stomache....three mint tea by bigelow.....with a touch of honey....
