A friend's daughter has ringworm?!

Question: A friend's daughter has ringworm?
Our daughter's are both 12 and play together all the time. Her daughter has ringworm in her scalp--which just started a day or two ago. How contagious is it to others in the family (she frequently sleeps over), are there over the counter remedies that can assist in clearing it up? This family has health insurance that starts in 6 days, but for now are there anti fungals that can help? They will take her to the doctor if necessary, it would just be better to wait a few days.

It's one patch in her hair. Distinctly ring worm. Is this contagious to the family dog? She takes fencing lessons and they're thinking that is the source of the nuisance.

Any advice will be great appreciated!

Answers:

Not everything that is round, red and scaly is ringworm. but until she gets to the doctor to get a diagnosis, consider it possibly ringworm and avoid the sleep overs. Don't share towels, combs, clothing. You could use over the counter antifungal shampoo or cream. There is a scraping that can be done to prove fungal infection. The over the counter antifungal could hide the fungus so the test seemed negative. I might just wait the six days. Dogs can only get certain types of fungus that affect humans.
