Who Suffers From High Blood Pressure Due To Hypertension?!

Question: Who Suffers From High Blood Pressure Due To Hypertension?
I have out of control hypertension which gives me high blood pressure and my doctor just changed my medication today and put me on Clonidine 0.1 mg. I didn't know the dosage until I had the prescription filled. This must be pretty powerful if he prescribed a dosage of 0.1 mg.

Has anyone with hypertension had this medication before at such a low dosage and did it work to keep your blood pressure under control and/or calm you down?

Answers:

You are on the lowest dosage of Clonidine. However, doctors frequently start their patients on low doses to see how well it controls their blood pressure. If needed they can easily increase the dose. btw, Hypertension is another word for high blood pressure.
The best way to tell if this is controlling your blood pressure is to check your blood pressure every morning right after you get out of bed. You can buy electronic blood pressure monitors at many different pharmacies or stores. They run anywhere from $30.00 to $120.00. If you have high blood pressure and are just starting out on medication they are well worth the money.
Clonidine can make you sleepy so be careful driving when you first start taking this medication. It may be a good idea to take it at night before you go to sleep. You cannot drink alcohol while taking this medication. If you wear contact lenses it may also dry your eyes out. I've given this medicine to a lot of patients and it worked very well for them. I also have high blood pressure but I take a different medication.
Keep a record of your blood pressure readings and when you go back to your doctor for a recheck take them with you to show him or her.

0.1mg is actually a pretty low dose of clonidine, as you mentioned. It is not a super-powerful drug as far as treatment of hypertension is concerned, but different people react differently to dose/drug changes, so often the dosage is started low. Clonidine is generally well tolerated, but we warn patients not to stop it abruptly as it can actually cause your blood pressure to go quite high if you withdrawl from it quickly.

If that is all you are taking, I would suspect that your blood pressure is not too terribly high?

On my husband's side. Apparently beetroot is good and eating less salt.

My mother did

If you want to keep your blood pressure down to normal readings, you should quit drinking soft drinks, coffee or any other water substitute and go with just straight water. Balance it with a little salt.

Yeah, I know all about the "salt causes high blood pressure" claims and the warnings that doctors give to cut back on salt. But people have been believing and following this advice for decades and high blood pressure is still on the rise. The reason is because this is flawed advice.

If you want a quick snapshot of your blood pressure, prick your finger and observe the thickness of your blood. People with high blood pressure will have thickened blood because much of the water has been removed by the body to inject into dehydrated cells. As the water is removed, the salt that is normally mixed with the water becomes concentrated, and this is the "excess salt" that doctors claim causes the high blood pressure.

But the actual pressure is caused by the process of reverse osmosis when the body squeezes the arteries to obtain the water it needs. Water plays an important role in the function of the cells. It transports nutrients to the cells. One of salt's many important functions is to remove toxins from the cells. Without adequate water, the cells don't receive the nutrients they need, and without the salt that is mixed with the water the cells become toxic and they start to malfunction. This leads to some serious health problems.

All of this is caused by not drinking enough water or drinking too many soft drinks and other "non-water" beverages as mentioned above. These drinks contain sugar, caffeine and other additives that alter their nutritional aspect, changing them into diuretics that pull out as much as 50% more water than they contain.

Along with their "cut back on salt" campaign, doctors minimize the importance of water. They advise to "drink plenty of fluids" giving the mistaken impression that "fluids" and water are equal in their function in the body. They're not - the body functions on water and nothing else.
