Ok this is going to sound gross, but what causes phlegm to be produced?!

Question: Ok this is going to sound gross, but what causes phlegm to be produced?
Ok, sorry for the weird/grossness of the question but, for the past couple months I've had like a lot of post nasal drip, like always coughing stuff up. I talked to my doctor and she's useless, she says it has to do with to much stomach acid?? Which makes no sense and she put me on an anacid trying to fix it and its not working. What else could it be? I'm going crazy!! Thanks

Answers:

Mucus glands cause it to be produced. I also have post-nasal-drip, my doctor diagnosed me with Chronic Rhinitis. As I used to cough until I threw up. Which is super pleasant. I have to take steroid-nasal-sprays which stop it from happening. A few of my friends also have it with varying symptoms - one gets lots of nosebleeds but the same steroid-sprays and creams/ointments have be prescribed. They seem to be working pretty well for everyone. Just tell your doctor the an-acids aren't working, don't self-medicate!

If you do have acid reflux what is happening is the mucousal lining of your esophagus is being dissolved by stomach acid and being sent up to be coughed out. It if is true you need to watch what you eat and drink and not eat 3 hours before bed and continue to take antacid. Very serious conditions can be created overtime if not properly treated. It is also possible that you have a hiatal hernia. You should have a long talk with your physician until you and she are on the same page on this.
