It depends on what STD you are talking about. Herpes, in general, is usually only contagious when sores are present, but is also very contagious 5 days prior to the sore appearing. HPV is contagious all the time. You don't need to have an outbreak of warts to be contagious. Both of these STDs can be spread even if you use protection because there is still a lot of skin exposed during sex and these are spread b y skin to skin contact.

Using condoms can help protect against STDs, however, they are NOT a guarantee. There are STDs that don't show symptoms at all so people may not even realize they have it. I work for Identigene, we do STD testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea, which are the two most common STDs out there.

You are at higher risk if you participate in high risk behavior such as unprotected sex and/or multiple partners. Talking about STDs and getting tested on a regular basis can help you protect your sexual health. Depends on the std. if it's herpes then you shouldn't have a big risk of contracting it if condoms are used while your partner doesn't have a break out. But there doesn't always have to be a break out to pass herpes on, there is a small chance of passing it on in between break outs.
