Dear Rebecca. Your poor body must be going through the mill with this terrible condition. I guess you have already had guidelines on diet and fluid but there is one thing you could ask the doctors to check for if they have not done it yet. Insist that they check you for Coeliac disease.

This is caused by an adverse reaction to gluten, a protein primarily found in wheat, rye and barley. The result is the immune system mistaking such food for a hostile organism such as a virus and attacking it, damaging the lining of the small intestine. Most people with this condition are incorrectly diagnosed with ibs. The blood test required identifies tissue transglutaminase and endomysialantibodies, two kinds of immune-system cells produced by coeliacs in response to gluten.

If individuals test positive for these antibodies, they are normally referred for a biopsy, which involves a tube and instruments being passed down the throat while the patient is sedated and a sample taken from the gut wall for further testing. Once on a gluten free diet, sufferers of this disease recover rapidly and the gut heals itself. I hope this may offer you some help in dealing with your condition.
