Question: Can too many supplements mess up my cholesterol and/or liver function?
I have been losing weight through diet and exercise. Lately, I have been on a supplement frenzy and am taking the following:

Prostate support blend including zinc
Niacin (the kind with the flush, not time released)
Lutein
Hyralaunic Acid with collagen
Fish oil (take normal dose)
Vitamin D
DIM
Vitamin C
Bromelain
Querciten

I also eat a VERY healthy diet coinsisting of mostly fish, nuts, avocados, salads, etc...all 'good' monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats with VERY little saturated fats. I do regular medium impact cardio. I have lost a tremendous amount of weight. I am much more fit than ever and feel good HOWEVER my blood tests for the last three months have shown lower HDL, increased LDL, lower DHEA and the only good thing is my PH has gone up to 7. Am I overloading my liver with too many things. I space them apart throughout the day and not all at once. Any thoughts?

I must congratulate you on your efforts to maintain such a strict regime to stay healthy. You're a 7 on the PH scale? That's tremendous!

I need to ask, however, why so many supplements? Are you not getting sufficient vitamins and minerals in your diet? While supplements are a good thing, there is such a thing as "too much of a good thing". Overloading your system unnecessarily can be just as damaging as what you're trying to avoid. You might want to trim this list and opt for unprocessed sea salt, instead, which contains about 84 trace minerals.

As for your increased LDL, most people don't realize this, but cholesterol is cholesterol, and the body produces 100% of what it needs - meaning it doesn't come from outside sources. There is no such thing as "bad" cholesterol.

The rise in cholesterol in the blood is due to unintentional dehydration. You don't sound like a person who would be addicted to soft drinks, but you're probably consuming energy drinks and not enough plain ordinary water. Or perhaps you just don't drink enough water. In all likelihood, you're cutting back on salt as per the common medical advice.

Dehydration causes the blood to thicken and become acidic with toxins. Passing through the lungs, it gets even more dehydrated when more water is removed through the breathing processed. Entering the arteries under a shearing pressure, it causes tiny cuts and abrasions to the artery walls that, if left unchecked, could peel off and lead to an embolism in the brain or other organ.

To prevent this, the body produces the so-called "bad" cholesterol to cover and protect this damaged area until repairs can be made.

Up to this point, everything is going as planned for in the design of the immune system. This "bad" cholesterol isn't designed to be a hazard to your health. Given the proper nutrients, the body will never produce anything harmful to itself.

The problem comes in when the medical profession refuses to recognize dehydration in the early stages where health problems originate. There is no profit in prescribing water. But if dehydration is ignored and allowed to worsen until it causes health problems, it becomes much more profitable.

Allowed to continue unabated, the dehydration continues to produce the acidic blood that damages the artery walls, signaling the production of more and more cholesterol.
