How long were you at the hospital for an upper endoscopy?!

Question: How long were you at the hospital for an upper endoscopy?
I'm getting an upper GI endoscopy Tuesday. I know the actual procedure will take 15-30 minutes, but how long would I have to be at the hospital?

Thanks in advance.

Answers:

This varies by facility, but at MY facility, it is usually as follows: (Example times are given)

0730 - patient arrives, has pre-admission tests, labs, etc.
0800 - Preop history, IV is started, papers signed.
0830 - Anesthesia is poking around, asking their questions. If no anesthesia, then nurse is preparing sedation information.
0900 - Doc finally arrives, does his gig, chats up the patient.
0930 - Go into room, get positioned, begin sedation after attaching monitors (BP, pulse ox, cardiac monitor). HINT: Some medications given IV may burn or ache - this is ok. :) We do IV sedation, which is not very deep, just barely induces sleep and relaxation and shortens recovery time.
0945-0955 - Procedure done, leaves Endo room to Recovery.
1000 - Recovery, burping = good. My facility requires oral intake so we order breakfast. 30 minute recovery time, during which patient is eating, IV is removed, dressed, instructions given.
1030 - Home. No driving today! :)

Hope that helped! Like I said, this is just example times, but generally about the same. I had mine at a different facility and it was very similar. :)

I'm an OR/Endo nurse :)

3-4 hours.

I was there for 3 to 4 hrs. You need someone to drive you home, or they will not let you leave.
